Nelson Road N8 is shut in four phases until late January. The Tottenham Lane burst is fixed, and the 41, 91, W3 and W5 are back on Crouch End Broadway.
Nelson Road N8 is the closure to plan around now. Thames Water booked it from Wednesday 30 September for around 17 weeks, in four phases, which runs to late January. The council’s register gives the first stretch, from Ridge Road, as 30 September to 29 October.
The buses are back on Crouch End Broadway. The Tottenham Lane burst main that pushed six routes off the Broadway from 20 September is over. On 3 October Transport for London showed a good service on the 41, 91, N41, N91, W3 and W5, with no diversion notice on any of them.
Updated 3 October: this is our regular check of Crouch End roadworks, bus diversions and rail closures. What changed since the last one, on 25 September:
- Tottenham Lane is clear. The diversions ran to their published end, 6pm on Friday 2 October. The council’s register for the week beginning 28 September now records the job: a Thames Water urgent repair between Elm Park Avenue and Ferme Park Road, under a road closure, from 21 September to 2 October.
- The 41 and 210 are back on their full routes. The Cadent Gas works at Hazellville Road N19 that cut the 41 short at Hornsey Rise have ended, and both routes show a good service.
- The Highgate Close stops on Hampstead Lane N6 have reopened. They no longer appear in TfL’s list of closed bus stops. They had been shut for more than a fortnight.
- The 329 is cut short at Wood Green again, until 6pm on Sunday 1 November, for the Turnpike Lane bus station works.
- The 102 and 234 are on night diversions off Muswell Hill Road until 5am on Thursday 8 October, for resurfacing on the High Road in East Finchley.
- Shepherds Hill N6 gets temporary traffic lights on Wednesday 7 October, for a Thames Water pipe replacement outside and opposite number 65.
- Ridge Road N8 has finished, after its return from 24 to 30 September.
- Sunday 11 October is the next rail problem. There is no Suffragette line service between Gospel Oak and Barking Riverside until 9.45am or after 11pm, which takes out Crouch Hill and Harringay Green Lanes.
The bus changes are from TfL’s live status for every bus route and its closed bus stops list, both read on 3 October. The street dates are from Haringey’s register for the week beginning 28 September, read the same day. Thames Water’s Crouch End project page still gives Nelson Road from 30 September for around 17 weeks.
This page sets out what is actually closed in Crouch End, Hornsey, Muswell Hill and Highgate right now, which buses have moved, and the parking and route arithmetic that stays true after the cones go.
One warning about the council’s own source. Haringey’s weekly roadworks register is updating again, but it is not accurate. The edition for the week beginning 28 September still lists Crouch Hill as closed from 9 February to 2 November, more than two weeks after the road reopened. It only picked up Nelson Road, the longest closure now booked, in that same edition. It added the Tottenham Lane repair a week after the buses were diverted, and Thames Water’s Crouch End project page has never mentioned it. Where the register and Transport for London disagree below, we have gone with TfL, because its diversions change on the day.
Crouch Hill is open again, 46 days early
Crouch Hill had been under a temporary road closure since 9 February 2026 for Thames Water’s mains replacement. Every date published until this month gave the end as 2 November. It reopened on 17 September: 220 days closed rather than 266.
Two things confirm it. Thames Water’s project page no longer names Crouch Hill among the streets it is working on, having listed it at the top of that section for seven months. And TfL’s status for the W7 is back to a good service with no diversion notice, on a route that had been diverted away from Crouch Hill and Crouch Hill station since February. We reported the early reopening when the date first appeared, in Crouch Hill reopens six weeks early.
The council’s own pages have not caught up. The weekly register still gives 9 February to 2 November in its 21 September edition, and the major roadworks page still describes the scheme as running “from Monday 9 February for up to 9 months in 4 locations”.
The Tottenham Lane burst main is fixed
A burst water main on Tottenham Lane N8 was the big disruption at the Broadway in late September. TfL’s notice, first issued on Sunday 20 September, moved six routes:
- 41, 91, N41 and N91 went via Park Road, Priory Road and High Street in both directions, missing the stops between Crouch End Broadway and Hornsey station.
- W3, towards Northumberland Park, missed Tottenham Lane YMCA and Palace Road.
- W5, towards Harringay, went via Crouch Hill, Mount View Road, Ferme Park Road and Weston Park, missing Crouch End Broadway and Tottenham Lane YMCA.
TfL first gave the end as 5pm on Thursday 24 September, then extended it to 6pm on Friday 2 October. On 3 October all six routes showed a good service with no diversion notice.
The council’s register for the week beginning 28 September is the only other record of the job. It describes a Thames Water urgent repair on Tottenham Lane, between Elm Park Avenue and Ferme Park Road, under a temporary road closure from 21 September to 2 October. Tottenham Lane is the A103, the main road east out of the Broadway towards Hornsey and Turnpike Lane, which is why one hole there moved so many buses.
Nelson Road, from 30 September to late January
Thames Water’s page now books Nelson Road N8 from 30 September 2026 for around 17 weeks, under a phased road closure between the junction with Ridge Road and the junction with Weston Park. Seventeen weeks from 30 September runs to the end of January. Each phase “should take around four weeks to complete”, and parking suspensions apply throughout.
The four phases, as published:
- Phase one: the junction of Ridge Road up to approximately 15 Nelson Road
- Phase two: 15 Nelson Road up to approximately 41 Nelson Road
- Phase three: 41 Nelson Road up to approximately 75 Nelson Road
- Phase four: 75 Nelson Road to Weston Park
The council’s register for the week beginning 28 September lists Nelson Road from the junction with Ridge Road to “Weston Road”, 30 September to 29 October 2026, under a temporary road closure. Thames Water says Weston Park, which is the road at that end. The council’s end date covers about four weeks, so read it as phase one rather than the whole job. The run-up to it, Ridge Road N8 from Ferme Park Road to Nelson Road, was booked for 24 to 30 September and has finished.
The mains scheme, and where each phase stands
Thames Water is replacing the Victorian water mains under Crouch End. The council puts the scheme at £13 million, replacing more than 8km of ageing Victorian pipes, serving about 3,000 properties across 29 streets. Cabinet member Seema Chandwani described it as a “two-year programme” across the borough. Crouch Hill was chosen first because it has burst repeatedly in recent years.
Working hours are 7.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. Pedestrian access to homes and businesses is kept open throughout, along with emergency access, and parking bays are suspended in each phase as it moves. Thames Water’s number for this scheme is 0800 316 9800, quoting reference BB01441522.
| Road | Dates | Traffic measure | Status on 3 October |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Broadway | 9 February 2026, about 1 month | Two way traffic lights | Finished |
| Crouch Hill | 9 February to 17 September 2026 | Full closure | Reopened, 46 days early |
| Oakington Way | 23 February 2026, about 2 weeks | Full closure | Finished |
| Briston Grove | 10 March 2026, about 4 weeks | Full closure | Finished |
| Elm Grove | 7 April 2026, about 6 weeks | Rolling closure, 100 to 150 metres | Finished |
| Dickenson Road | 15 June to 14 August 2026 on the register | Rolling closure | Finished |
| Ridge Road N8 | 16 February to 13 August 2026, then 24 to 30 September 2026 | Full closure | Finished 30 September |
| Wolseley Road | 17 to 24 August 2026, per TfL | Road blocked, W5 diverted | Finished, never on the council register |
| Tregaron Avenue N8 | 2 September to 26 November 2026 | Full closure, in 100m phases | Running |
| Granville Road N4 | 4 September to 8 October 2026 | Full closure | Running, due to end 8 October |
| Haslemere Road N8 | 14 September to 13 November 2026 | Full closure | Running |
| Nelson Road N8 | From 30 September 2026, around 17 weeks | Phased closure, four phases | Running from 30 September; council register gives 30 Sep to 29 Oct for the first stretch |
Ridge Road came back for a week. It was finished in August, and Thames Water returned to it from 24 to 30 September, between Ferme Park Road and Nelson Road. That is the junction where Nelson Road’s phase one started on 30 September.
Two of those come with a caveat worth knowing before you search for them.
Thames Water spells the new Crouch End closure “Haselmere Road”. The street is Haslemere Road N8, which is how the council’s register spells it and how it appears in OpenStreetMap. The two organisations also describe different lengths of it: Thames Water gives the work as running from the junction with Crouch Hill up to Oakfield Court, with driveway access affected and access kept for residents of Oakfield Court; the council gives it as the junction with Crouch Hill to Crouch End Hill, which is the longer stretch. Thames Water says eight weeks from 14 September, which would end on 9 November; the council says 13 November.
Granville Road is settled. When Thames Water first published it, it gave no postcode, and Haringey has more than one Granville Road. The council’s register now places it in Stroud Green ward as Granville Road N4, from the junction with Ridge Road to the junction with Mount View Road, from 4 September to 8 October. Thames Water’s “around five weeks” from 4 September lands in the same week.
The two hills, and why the diversion looked wrong
Crouch End’s geography catches people out, including satnavs, and it is the reason a single closure here hurts. Two different roads leave the Broadway going downhill to the south, their names differ by one word, and they are different classified routes to different places:
- Crouch Hill is the A1201. It runs southeast to Crouch Hill station, Stroud Green Road and Finsbury Park. This is the one that was closed.
- Crouch End Hill is the A103. It runs southwest to Hornsey Rise and on towards Archway.
While Crouch Hill was shut, the direct line to Stroud Green and Finsbury Park went with it, and everything took the long way round by Crouch End Hill and Hornsey Rise. Both are open again.
Which buses have moved
Checked against TfL’s live status on 3 October.
Every route through Crouch End Broadway is on its normal route. The 41, 91, W5 and W7, and the N41 and N91 at night, all show a good service. So do the W3, the 210, the 310 and the 603.
The 102 and 234 are diverted at night off Muswell Hill Road, between 9pm and 5am, until 5am on Thursday 8 October. The cause is resurfacing on the High Road in East Finchley:
- 102 runs via The Bishops Avenue, Great North Road, Archway Road and Muswell Hill Road. It misses the stops from East Finchley Station “E” to Muswell Hill Road “K” towards Edmonton, and from Muswell Hill Road “L” to East Finchley Station “H” towards Brent Cross.
- 234 runs via Archway Road and Muswell Hill Road. It misses Muswell Hill Road “H” to “K” towards The Spires, and “L” to “S” towards Archway.
- 143 is on the same night diversion, between Hendon Lane and East Finchley station.
The 329 is cut short at Wood Green until 6pm on Sunday 1 November, for the Turnpike Lane bus station works. Towards Turnpike Lane it terminates at Wood Green Station “D”, and towards Little Park Gardens it starts from Wood Green Bus Garage “C”. We reported the route back to normal after 18 September; TfL has since reinstated the short working.
The 299 is diverted at its northern end, via Chase Side, for Thames Water works on Reservoir Road N14 in Southgate. Its Muswell Hill end is not affected.
Routes 123, 134, 144, 184, 232 and 17 show a good service. The 43’s diversions are all in the City of London and do not affect its Highgate and Archway end.
No strike notices. The Arriva North London dispute was settled on 7 September, and TfL’s bus status carries no strike warning for any route. Our report on the deal has the terms, including cab air conditioning by May 2027.
Routes 91, 123, 232 and N91 changed permanently on Saturday 1 August, and this is not roadworks. TfL rebuilt these routes around the Haringey Heartlands development:
- 91 now runs Trafalgar Square to Wood Green, keeping its old route as far as Crouch End and then going on via Haringey Heartlands to Wood Green station.
- 123 now runs Ilford to Turnpike Lane station at all times.
- 232 keeps its route to Wood Green station and then continues to Haringey Heartlands, Coburg Road.
- N91 runs via Haringey Heartlands between Hornsey and Wood Green station rather than via Turnpike Lane and Wood Green High Road.
The buses that call at Crouch End Broadway itself are the 41, 91, W5 and W7, plus the N41 and N91 at night. The W3, despite how often it gets recommended locally, does not stop at the Broadway.
If you change at Finsbury Park
A separate Thames Water main replacement at Highbury Grove N5, about two miles south of Crouch End, still has routes 4, 19, N19 and 236 diverted in both directions until 6pm on Monday 2 November. The 19 and N19 are not serving the stops between Highbury Corner and Finsbury Park Interchange. The 236 has a second diversion on top, via Green Lanes, for emergency works on Highbury New Park until 8pm on Tuesday 6 October.
TfL also has lane restrictions on Seven Sisters Road at Woodberry Grove, between Green Lanes and Amhurst Park, until 24 October, with Woodberry Grove and Lordship Road closed in both directions towards the junction.
If you drive west towards East Finchley
The Fortis Green junction restrictions on the A1000 ended on 28 September. Two things are on that side now:
- Night resurfacing on the High Road N2, the reason the 102, 143 and 234 are diverted at night until 8 October.
- Lane one closed westbound on the A1 Lyttelton Road at Gurney Drive, for emergency Cadent Gas works, until 12 October.
Trains: the Suffragette line on Sunday 11 October
Checked against TfL’s line status for the fortnight to 18 October:
- Suffragette line, Sunday 11 October: no service between Gospel Oak and Barking Riverside until 9.45am or after 11pm. That closes Crouch Hill and Harringay Green Lanes for those hours. No replacement buses run. Between 9.45am and 11pm only the Barking to Barking Riverside end is shut.
- Weaver line, Sunday 11 October: no service between Liverpool Street and Cheshunt, Chingford and Enfield Town until 10.15am. Greater Anglia and Stansted Express trains that usually call at Seven Sisters stop at Tottenham Hale instead.
- Weaver line, Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October: no service between Hackney Downs and Cheshunt or Enfield Town after 10.45pm each evening.
- Piccadilly line, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October: no service between Hammersmith and Heathrow or Uxbridge. That is the far end of the line. Wood Green, Turnpike Lane, Bounds Green and Manor House are not affected.
The Northern line and Great Northern trains from Hornsey and Harringay show a good service with nothing planned in the fortnight. The Victoria line’s only closure is between Victoria and Brixton, from 7.30pm on Saturday 3 October to 10am on Sunday 4 October.

| Ferry Lane N17 | Tottenham Hale | Public realm improvement, bus station to Mill Mead Road | 17 Aug 2026 to Jul 2027 | Road closure |
Four of those deserve a flag.
Shepherds Hill is a one-day job, on Wednesday 7 October. Thames Water is replacing a pipe outside and opposite number 65 under multiway signals. The register also gave it 1 October. Shepherds Hill is the main road down from Highgate towards Crouch End, so expect queues back to Archway Road that day.
Farrer Road is an “urgent repair” running four months. Thames Water’s job between Farrer Mews and Park Road, in Hornsey, started on 17 August and the register books the road closure through to 23 December. It has not appeared on Thames Water’s Crouch End project page at any point, which suggests it is a separate repair rather than part of the mains scheme.
Coburg Road N22 closes from 5 to 9 October. This is the Haringey Heartlands road the 232 has terminated at since 1 August. The register gives Thames Water disconnection works from outside Mallard Place to Silsoe Road. TfL has published no diversion for it so far, so check the 232 and 91 status before you travel that week.
Bounds Green Road is published as phases, not a single block. The major roadworks page describes the 20mph scheme as about 11 weeks of two way signals from 24 August, between Braemar Avenue and the North Circular, after a 2025 consultation in which 76% of respondents backed it. The register splits the highways work into sections: the Passmore Gardens and Blake Road junction runs to 13 October, and the Truro Road junction follows from 19 October to 10 November. From TfL’s route data the 102, 184, 232 and 299 all run along Bounds Green Road.
One quirk of the register worth knowing if you use it yourself: the same job can appear under several wards. The High Road N22 overnight works sit under four. In the 28 September edition Muswell Hill, Seven Sisters, Tottenham Green and White Hart Lane all read “no planned activities in this ward”. That is a statement about the register, not about those streets.
Finished since our last update
Worth saying plainly, because a roadworks page that only ever adds closures is useless. These have run their course since 25 September:
- The Tottenham Lane burst main, and the diversions on the 41, 91, N41, N91, W3 and W5, on 2 October.
- The Hazellville Road N19 gas works, and the 41, N41 and 210 diversions, on 30 September.
- Ridge Road N8, on 30 September.
- The Highgate Close stop closures on Hampstead Lane N6.
- Southwood Lawn Road N6 at Jacksons Lane, on 28 September.
- Park Road N8, Virgin Media’s one-day job on 28 September, and Hornsey Lane N6, a one-day valve replacement on 1 October.
- Grenham Road N10, on 29 September.
- The A1000 lane restrictions at Fortis Green, on 28 September, and the Culvert Road N15 lane closure, on 28 September.
- Bedford Road N22, Westbury Avenue N22 and Mayes Road N22, all finished by 27 September.
- The Piccadilly line closure between Cockfosters and Uxbridge on 26 and 27 September.
And from earlier: Crouch Hill N8, which reopened on 17 September after 220 days, the W7 diversion lifted with it, Berkeley Road N8, Lockmead Road N15, The Broadway N8 contraflow at Middle Lane, Shepherds Hill N6 duct laying, Alexandra Park Road N22, Hartham Road N17, Coningsby Road N4, the C11 diversion at Raydon Street N19, the Suffragette line Sunday closures of September, the Arriva strikes, Cranbourne Road N10, Wolseley Road N8, Dickenson Road N8, Muswell Hill Road N6, Birkbeck Road N8 and The Avenue N10.
The routes that matter when something closes
The reason a single closure hurts here is that Crouch End sits in a bowl with a small number of classified roads through it, and the alternatives are residential streets that were never meant to carry the traffic. These are the through routes, with their classifications from OpenStreetMap:
| Route | Roads it uses | What it connects |
|---|---|---|
| A103 | Crouch End Hill, The Broadway, Tottenham Lane, Hornsey Rise | Archway to Hornsey, the main road through Crouch End |
| A1201 | Crouch Hill, The Broadway, Park Road, Stroud Green Road | Finsbury Park to Hornsey |
| A504 | Muswell Hill Broadway, Fortis Green, Turnpike Lane | East Finchley to Tottenham, across the top |
| B550 | Muswell Hill Road, Colney Hatch Lane, Southwood Lane | Highgate to Muswell Hill and the North Circular |
| B138 | Wightman Road, Hornsey Park Road | The Harringay ladder, the long-standing rat run |
| A1 | Archway Road, Aylmer Road, North Hill | Archway to the A1 north, the western edge |
| A406 | North Circular Road | The northern boundary, at Bounds Green |
The useful thing to take from that is which closures actually matter. Anything on the A103 through the Broadway is the serious one, because there is no parallel classified route: traffic goes into the side streets. That is exactly what the Tottenham Lane burst main did in late September, and it is why six bus routes moved for one hole in the road. A closure on the A1201, which is what Crouch Hill was, is bad but survivable, because the A103 absorbs it. And Wightman Road is the pressure valve for all of it, which is why it gets mentioned every time something else shuts.
Parking, and the two hour windows
Crouch End is covered by two controlled parking zones, and their hours are different in a way that catches out visitors and rewards anyone who reads the signs:
- Crouch End A (CEA): Monday to Friday, 10am to 12 noon.
- Crouch End B (CEB): Monday to Friday, 2pm to 4pm.
Both zones were introduced in 2009 and extended in 2011, and both sets of hours were reviewed and deliberately kept. Haringey consulted on CEA in November 2022, got 773 resident responses, and the Head of Highways and Parking approved retaining the 10am to 12 noon times on 16 October 2023. On CEB, 81.2% of those who responded did not want the hours changed either.
The catch is what happens outside those two hours. The CEB review papers record residents complaining that because the zone only bites from 2pm to 4pm, anyone can park free “until 2pm and then go home”, including commuters and drivers avoiding the neighbouring Islington zones. A short controlled window keeps residents’ bays free at the moment they need them and leaves the rest of the day open, which is either the point or the problem depending on who you ask.
The same CEA decision increased the waiting and loading restrictions on Broadway from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, to Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6.30pm.
During the mains work, parking bays are suspended along each street as the job reaches it, so a permit does not guarantee a space on a road being dug up. Nelson Road residents should expect that until late January, phase by phase.
Before you drive: what to check
- Haringey’s weekly roadworks register by ward is the fullest single list of streetworks in the borough, organised by ward, with dates and the traffic measure for each job. Check the heading date before you trust it: it spent seven weeks on the edition of 27 July, and it has updated weekly since 14 September. It is slow on emergency repairs: the Tottenham Lane burst main only appeared in it a week after the buses were diverted.
- The council’s current and upcoming major roadworks page covers the big schemes, though its Crouch End entry is now out of date.
- TfL bus status carries the diversions in full and is more current than anything the council publishes, because it changes the day a diversion starts.
- Thames Water’s project page, which is the only place Nelson Road has been published, or 0800 316 9800, reference BB01441522, for anything to do with the mains scheme.
Of those, the register is the fuller list and TfL is the more current one, but neither is reliably right. Read both, and expect the road to disagree with each.
Frequently asked questions
Is Crouch Hill open?
Yes. It reopened on Thursday 17 September 2026, after 220 days closed for Thames Water mains replacement, and 46 days ahead of the 2 November date published for most of the year. The W7 serves Crouch Hill and Crouch Hill station again.
Which roads in Crouch End are closed now?
Haslemere Road N8, from Crouch Hill towards Crouch End Hill, until 13 November. Tregaron Avenue N8 until 26 November, in 100 metre phases. Granville Road N4, in Stroud Green, until 8 October. Nelson Road N8 from 30 September, in four phases to late January. Tottenham Lane is open again after the burst main repair, which ended on 2 October.
How long will Nelson Road be shut?
Thames Water books it from 30 September 2026 for around 17 weeks, which runs to the end of January. It is a phased closure between Ridge Road and Weston Park, in four sections of about four weeks each, with parking suspended as each phase reaches it.
Which buses are diverted in Crouch End this week?
None of the Broadway routes. On 3 October TfL showed a good service on the 41, 91, W3, W5 and W7, and on the N41 and N91, after the Tottenham Lane diversions ended on 2 October. Nearby, the 102 and 234 are on night diversions off Muswell Hill Road until 8 October, and the 329 is cut short at Wood Green until 1 November.
Is Crouch Hill station open?
Yes. The next closure is on Sunday 11 October, when there is no Suffragette line service between Gospel Oak and Barking Riverside until 9.45am or after 11pm. No replacement buses run.
Are the buses on strike?
No. Arriva North London drivers voted to accept a new deal and Unite called off the strikes on 7 September. No further strike dates stand. The deal includes air conditioning in drivers’ cabs by May 2027.
Is the Tube closed this weekend?
Not near Crouch End on the weekend of 3 and 4 October. The only Tube closure is on the Victoria line between Victoria and Brixton, from 7.30pm on Saturday to 10am on Sunday. On 17 and 18 October the Piccadilly line closes between Hammersmith and Heathrow or Uxbridge, which leaves Wood Green, Turnpike Lane and Manor House open.
What is Thames Water doing in Crouch End?
Replacing more than 8km of Victorian water mains across 29 streets, at a cost of about £13 million, serving roughly 3,000 properties. Crouch Hill was first because it had burst repeatedly. Work runs 7.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays, and Thames Water says the scheme covers those 29 streets “over the next year”.
What are the Crouch End parking zone hours?
Crouch End A operates Monday to Friday, 10am to 12 noon. Crouch End B operates Monday to Friday, 2pm to 4pm. Outside those windows you do not need a permit in either zone.
Which buses go from Crouch End Broadway?
The 41, 91, W5 and W7 by day, and the N41 and N91 at night. The 91 was extended on 1 August 2026 and now runs through to Wood Green station via Haringey Heartlands. The W3 does not serve Crouch End Broadway. All of them are on their normal routes again since the Tottenham Lane diversions ended on 2 October.
Are Crouch Hill and Crouch End Hill the same road?
No. Crouch Hill is the A1201 and runs southeast towards Stroud Green and Finsbury Park. Crouch End Hill is the A103 and runs southwest towards Hornsey Rise and Archway. Only Crouch Hill was closed.
Corrections
- 22 September 2026: we had recorded Lockmead Road N15 in South Tottenham as finished on 18 September, from the previous register. The 21 September edition gave the Thames Water work there as running to 25 September.
- 3 October 2026: our earlier updates said the council’s register carried nothing about the Tottenham Lane burst main. That was true of the 21 September edition, but the 28 September edition lists it as a Thames Water urgent repair from 21 September to 2 October.
- 3 October 2026: we reported route 329 back to normal after 18 September. TfL has since reinstated the Wood Green short working, to 1 November.
